WEEK FIVE

OCCUPANCY: 23

Rise and shine, little monsters. A new week is waiting just for you. The events of yesterday may have been hard to stomach, but time heals all wounds, after all. The damages the house has incurred over the last week have been reverted and the staff is hard at work fulfilling their roles in this mansion. A piping hot breakfast is served in the dining room promptly at 7am, every square inch of floor and furniture has been cleaned spotless, and Pumpkin is...probably around tending to the animals outside. As you exit your rooms on this lovely morning, guests will find that the barrier leading upstairs has diminished, and a new floor has been opened to explore.

For anyone who ventures into the ballroom, a new change may become apparent. Should you choose to look at the plaques long enough, two images will flicker and change sporadically. While Phoenix's portrait remains the same, on occasion it will change to an unrecognizable figure, flames surrounding the charred flesh. Likewise, Four's portrait looks just like herself, though if you blink you may miss the sharp knives protruding through her chest, rivers of blood dripping down her front. There is no rhyme and reason for the change...though perhaps it serves as a reminder to those who remain.

Additionally, the house rules have been moved from the ballroom and back into the hallway, mounted in the entryway as they were.

You know what to expect by now. Once a week, one of your own transforms into someone unrecognizable. But it's hard to empathize with someone without experiencing the hardship for yourself, isn't it? Worry not. Starting today, from the moment you wake, you will find that you yourself have changed into something unrecognizable. Claws, fangs, fur, scales, extra limbs, extra mouths...the changes are numerous as your monster form takes a hold of you. Oh but it's alright! It's just the physical appearance, after all. You're still yourself inside...but it may be hard to believe that as the week goes on.

Some of you may be able to brush these strange changes aside. Others of you may find yourself struggling to understand who you really are. And others of you will find even more problems on hand. Is it your imagination, or did the mansion grow several degrees colder? You just can't quite to seem to warm up. While you may normally be comfortable sharing blankets with your fellow guests, you now find yourself feeling a bit greedy and unwilling to share...well, anything, really. The insatiable greed requires you to take and take and take, no matter if you require the necessities you're taking. And yet even as you take, and especially as you consume, you find that you're never quite satisfied, belly never quite full regardless of how much you eat. That's troubling, isn't it?

You may experience only some of these events. Then again, maybe you're unlucky and you're experiencing all of these events at different points in time. Time is of the essence, however, and come Monday at noon a rustling crackle of static can be heard from overhead. Try as you might, you won't be able to find the speakers but a message will play loud and clear for all.

[ HE CAN KNOW THIS MUCH i'm allowing him to know this much because his children live off junk food if he doesn't wrangle them into eating proper meals, so he can claim slightly more camping knowledge than Ken's lack of. ]

[ what is camping when you live in a what looks like to be a pretty spendy port city. either way, ken is pleased that ayabe seems to be agreeable to the idea of them making s'mores. honestly, this started off so poorly but now it doesn't...seem to be too bad? he hopes, anyway.

there's a soft laugh. when ayabe struggles. ]

It'd be pretty funny to tell a ghost story while you look like that.

I don't think we have to worry about bears. ...unless you think we should have something to worry about.

[ sure they're all various degrees of "monster" but bears?? this also might be the friendliest these two have been to one another. i cry. ]

Hmm... Missile, so he doesn't get into the chocolate.

[ They have to make Missile traps, as mean as that sounds ): ]

Not traps to catch them, but like... how you hang bags with food from trees so bears can't get to them. It'll be easier if it's Missile.

[ Is that a thing? Google says yes, but it's not a very effective thing. It's one of those camping things you learn growing up ig, I went to one summer camp my entire life and there were snakes, not bears, so idk ]

(also yeah, strapping your things/foods into a bag and hanging it from a tree in the air is a valid thing to do. u_u i had to witness it happen once when the single time i, naru, when camping.) ]

[ look he doesn't understand it either but ken witnessed it with his two own eyes and barked at him. it's fine. ]

[ Wow. Ayabe is me with my split 4 hours + 2 hours of sleep a night, his brain isn't working either. ]

Is he or somebody here scared of lamps?

I don't think so, but is that why you think all of us are what we are?

I didn't think anyone where was afraid of dogs.

There might be someone. Or something like dogs, like the werewolves from a couple weeks before.

[ Somebody out there might be scared of lamps... Maybe one of the break in monsters that Ayabe may or may not have swung a lamp at. ]

If anyone was afraid of dogs, wouldn't we know it by now? It's not as thought Missile hasn't been everywhere by now.

[ and then some also what's this about smashing monsters with lamps????? ]

[ Don't worry about it ]

Some people hide what they're scared about? Like the fear of dogs, some people think it's silly and wouldn't want to admit it, right?

[ proceeds to worry about it. ]

I guess that's true. [ not like ken doesn't know a thing or two about not acting scared of something he is, in fact, scared of. ] ...but this is a lamp. If anyone is afraid of a lamp, those are easy enough to move aside somewhere.

Yeah. People who have fears that are easy to avoid are lucky...

[ Just in case, though, he's going to make sure there's a zip lock bag or something for the chocolate so Missile can't get into it, dog or lamp. As a lamp, his light would probably melt it and that'd be bad too. ]

Is there anything else you want to do? It's going to be boring hanging out with me. I'll probably just light a candle and read.

[ honestly that's kind of fair but ayabe's question and follow up has ken kind of looking at him weirdly for a moment. give him a moment before he replies slowly. ]

Why would you think that? You're better than some people here—so I won't find it boring.

It's not like we need to do something just because we're in the same space.

[ It's the babysitting instinct where he feels compelled to provide some sort of entertainment like he would have to do for his siblings or else they would tear up the entire house the moment he looks away. ]

You wouldn't mind it? Just being together, quietly, in the same space. I would have thought you'd have other people you'd rather spend the time with.

[ 0 surprise that the concept of ken just fine with them being silent buddies would be a foreign concept for ayabe. still, he offers a small smile and a tail wag. ]

I'm pretty quiet myself, if you haven't noticed.

And if I do get bored, it's not as thought I'm not allowed to leave for a while before coming back, right?

[ Having been living with Ken all this time, Ayabe's noticed. It was probably even more noticeable after Dazai had died, when he was the more talkative one out of the three of them, and when he left, it was just... heavy silence. If Ayabe was comfortable in it before, it stopped being that after. ]

Yeah, you can leave whenever you want. And if you want to come back after, you'll always have a place here.

[ which is honestly fair. meanwhile, ken didn't mind the noise and is fine with the silence, but it's really the stability and well-being of his roommate that he's concerned about, especially after some conversations. ]

Yeah, I should hope so. [ imagine if ayabe kicked him out after doing all the work... smh. ] ...and if you change your mind, we can always move back into the room. I won't mind taking things back and forth.

[ in before the garden is the next murder site. ]

[ He might not kick Ken out, but he may or may not be barring all visitors from his tent at certain hours, depending. ]

You should mind. It's a lot of stuff. There's a wagon inside the closet you can use if you need it, but it won't help with all the stairs.

[ He can throw things in there on the ground floor and Ayabe can help him wheel things out after? It doesn't save that much time and effort, but it's something. ]

[ be nice their nonexistent guests?? though at the same time given how things end up for them on thursday night, maybe it's for the best... ]

It's not that much. [ just. several trips. ] Besides, it'll be nice to do something a little productive.

[ productive that's not directly involved with banging his head against walls and destroying some of his cr u_u ]

I'll consider the wagon when and if we need to use it.
